DIN Abrasion Tester

DIN Abrasion Tester
A specialized testing instrument designed to measure the abrasion resistance of rubber, elastomers, and flexible materials using the DIN (Deutsches Institut für Normung) method—a globally recognized standard for evaluating wear under controlled conditions. This machine simulates abrasive wear by rotating a sample against a standardized abrasive paper under a fixed load, quantifying material loss to assess durability.

Equipped with a rotating sample holder, a calibrated abrasive drum (typically coated with silicon carbide paper), and adjustable load settings (commonly 10N, 20N, or 50N), the tester operates by:

  • Pressing the sample against the rotating abrasive surface for a specified number of cycles (e.g., 40m of abrasion distance).
  • Measuring the weight loss of the sample post-test to calculate abrasion resistance (higher resistance = lower weight loss).

Key applications include:

  • Rubber & Elastomers: Tires, seals, gaskets, and rubber soles (assessing wear in daily use).
  • Plastics & Polymers: Flexible plastic components, conveyor belts, and industrial hoses.
  • Coated Fabrics: Wear resistance of coated textiles used in footwear, luggage, or upholstery.

Compliant with international standards such as DIN 53516, ISO 4649, and ASTM D5963, this tester is trusted by manufacturers, quality control labs, and R&D teams. It provides critical data to optimize material formulations, validate product durability claims, and ensure compliance with industry standards for wear performance.
