Rubber Wallace Plasticity Tester

Rubber Wallace Plasticity Tester
A specialized instrument designed to measure the plasticity and recovery properties of raw rubber, rubber compounds, and elastomers—critical parameters for evaluating material processability and performance. Named after its inventor, the Wallace tester uses a standardized method to assess how rubber deforms under controlled heat and pressure, providing data to optimize mixing, molding, and curing processes.

Equipped with a heated platen (typically 100°C), a precision load system, and a dial gauge for measuring deformation, the tester operates by:

  • Heating a rubber sample to a fixed temperature (e.g., 100°C) to simulate processing conditions.
  • Applying a constant load (e.g., 10N) for a specified time (usually 5 minutes) to compress the sample.
  • Recording the plastic deformation (plasticity number, P0) and measuring recovery (elastic recovery, R) after removing the load—indicating the material’s ability to return to its original shape.

Key applications include:

  • Rubber Manufacturing: Quality control of raw rubber (natural or synthetic) and mixed compounds before processing (e.g., extrusion, vulcanization).
  • Formulation R&D: Optimizing additive ratios (fillers, plasticizers, curatives) to adjust plasticity for specific applications (e.g., flexible seals vs. rigid rubber parts).
  • Industrial Quality Assurance: Ensuring consistency in rubber batches for tires, gaskets, hoses, and consumer rubber products.

Compliant with international standards such as ASTM D926, ISO 4663, and BS 903 Part A9, this tester is a staple in rubber labs and production facilities. It provides quantitative data to ensure materials meet processing requirements—preventing issues like uneven curing, poor mold flow, or inconsistent mechanical properties in finished products.
